Square Enix has finally taken the wraps off when we can expect the long-awaited 15th installment to the Final Fantasy series. Final Fantasy XV will be released worldwide on September 30th for both the Xbox One and Playstation 4. The announcement was made at the company’s Uncovered event in Hollywood.
It will also be available in two special additions, the Deluxe Edition and the Ultimate Collector’s Edition, each offering bundles of goodies such as bonus content, a new feature-length FFXV Blu-ray movie, an art book, and more. Final Fantasy XV is available for pre-order on the Square Enix online store.
The game, which was in development hell for nearly a decade, was announced in 2006 under the moniker Final Fantasy versus 13, as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series which also includes the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy, as well Final Fantasy Type-0. It was originally meant for the PS3, but the game saw many delays due to the ambitious goals intended for the game. Years later, after many questioned the company’s commitment to finishing the game, it was announced under a new name and had shifted to the current generation consoles.
Square Enix had made a point to keep gamers informed of the game’s development status, releasing several new trailers and two playable demos that not only gave us a glimpse of the gameplay, but gave Square Enix a change to tweak things like gameplay mechanics. A new demo was announced at Uncovered and is available for free now on Xbox and PS4.
In addition to the release date, Square Enix also announced a slew of other things, such as a new FFXV anime series (available on Youtube), a mobile game for iOS, Android and Windows 10, as well the new film Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy, set for release this summer.
Square Enix seems to be going all-out for Final Fantasy XV, and it looks like it just might pay off. Anticipation for this game is incredibly high, especially now that gamers have already gotten a taste of it.
