Firefox 97 brings Windows 11 scrollbars and new Colorway themes

Mozilla has announced the release of Firefox 97, it brings support for the new Windows 11 scrollbars and new Colorway browser themes to choose from. If you’re on macOS, there are also improvements to the system font loading which should make opening and switching to new tabs faster under certain circumstances. These changes in this update make it one of the biggest in terms of the interface people interact with.

The biggest change in this update that affects everyone is the retirement of the Colorway themes that launched with Firefox 94. Mozilla said that if you have chosen one of these themes then you can hold onto it but if you want to switch themes you’ll have to pick one of the new Colorway themes.

Commenting on the retirement of the existing Colorway themes, Mozilla said:

“On February 8, we will expire the 18 colorway themes of Firefox version 94. This signals the end of a special, limited-time feature set. However, you can keep your favorite colorway forever, as long as you’re using it on the expiration date. In other words, if a colorway is “enabled” in the add-ons manager (accessed by typing about:addons into the URL bar), that colorway is yours forever.”

For those of you on Windows 11, Mozilla said that it has added support in Firefox for the new style of scrollbars. This won’t make much of an impact on the browser but it will look more at home in Microsoft’s latest operating system which will please those users who like coherence.

On macOS, system font loading has been improved so that opening and switching tabs will happen quicker. On Linux, support for directly generating PostScript for printing has been removed but PostScript printers are still supported. Aside from security updates, this is it for Firefox 97.

If you already run Firefox, it should update on its own soon. If you don’t have Firefox you can download the latest version now.
