Mozilla has ended its self-imposed boycott of Apple"s iOS platform by releasing the long-awaited iOS version of its popular web browser, Firefox for iPhone and iPad devices.
In a blog post, Vice President of Firefox Product Nick Nguyen said Firefox users can now used their favorite browser on their iOS devices with features users are used to, such as "smart and flexible search, intuitive tab management, syncing with Firefox Accounts and Private Browsing."
Firefox for iOS is now available in the App Store worldwide supporting both iPhone and iPad.
Due to restrictions imposed by Apple, Firefox for iOS will not feature Gecko, the core engine that normally powers Firefox, instead Apple"s Safari and its WebKit engine will power the browser. This is, however, commonplace for other browsers on the iOS platform, such as Google"s Chrome.
Despite the restrictions, Nguyen believes users will be won over by the features such as visual tabs, easy private browsing switching, search prediction with support for different search engines, and the ability to sync history, tabs, passwords and bookmarks from other devices running Firefox.
Mozilla is quite late to the iOS party and it will be interesting to see how users respond.
