Flickr"s decision in 2007 to require users to log in to their accounts using a Yahoo ID left many griping about the seemingly totalitarian nature of that rule. Users might have been a little pleased three years later when Yahoo, which owned Flickr at the time, allowed people to sign up for its services using their Facebook account, though this integration (along with Google"s) was revoked in 2014.
Thanks to SmugMug"s acquisition of Flickr early last year, users of the popular photo and video sharing platform are now free from the chains of its Yahoo ID-tied login system. Flickr has announced the latest change in a blog post, saying its users have been requesting a new login method since the acquisition.
Keep in mind, though, that not all members will be immediately migrated to the new login system due to the large number of Flickr users. The company promised to continue rolling out the fresh login method to more users over the next few weeks, meaning they will be able to change their username with an email address of their choice as well as set up a new password. Until then, their Yahoo ID is their only login option, at least for now.
