The return of the Fable franchise is looking more and more likely after earlier Xbox Live API leaks suggesting the impending revival of the franchise have now been corroborated in a new report by Eurogamer.
The publication cites its sources in claiming that a big-budget Fable game is, indeed, under development at Playground Games, the Microsoft-affiliated studio best known for the Forza Horizon series of games.
The Redmond giant is said to be devoting significant resources to the project, apparently moved to action by the recent success of PS4-exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn. That game has already sold millions of copies since its release last year, with its strong story-driven, single-player focus raking in a heap of praise from players and critics alike.
In a bid to provide a similar experience for its own platform, the company has settled on reviving the long-dormant, but hugely popular, Xbox-exclusive franchise first developed by the now-shuttered Lionhead Studios.
Playground Games, for its part, is believed to be a particularly capable developer, and its success with creating the Horizon spin-off for the Forza franchise has instilled enough confidence in the studio that Microsoft is handing it the reins of one of its most beloved IPs.
The studio has been on a hiring spree as of late, snagging talent from some of the most popular RPG-focused studios in the business and, according to Eurogamer, is only getting started. More than 200 developers are expected to start working on the game as Playground Games ramps up production in the coming months.
The project is believed to still be in its early stages, so an official reveal is likely far into the future. Playground Games is also reportedly looking at setting the new game apart from the canceled Fable Legends, and starting from scratch as it perhaps tries to reinvent what the Fable franchise will stand for in the future.
