Last night, Windows Insiders were graced with a new Fall Creators Update build to play with, namely build 16291. But as Insiders noted with build 16288, which was released last week, the latest Windows 10 Fast ring update also force installs an unreleased Nvidia GeForce driver which breaks Night light, f.lux, and textures in several games.
The problematic driver is version 387.68 and it appears to be installed once again when the update to 14291 completes. However, this time around it isn"t possible to "Roll Back Driver" because the option is grayed out. The only thing you can do is install the latest publicly available WHQL driver, which is 385.41 (by selecting clean install) and then disabling automatic driver updates from within Windows.
How do I stop Windows from updating my video driver?
- Click on the Start button and start typing Control Panel
- Make your way to System and Security
- Click System
- Click Advanced system settings from the left sidebar
- Select the Hardware tab
- Press the Device Installation Settings button
- Choose No, and then press the Save Changes button
- Close everything.
Until a newer driver is made available which doesn"t break things like Night light, f.lux, and textures within certain games, Insiders will have to block driver updates. Users can also opt to disable Night light, f.lux, and stop playing those games as well, and keep the newer driver, which apparently includes OpenGL 4.6, but as we can see requires more testing.
