It would appear that some Windows Insiders are having trouble with the latest Nvidia driver that is force installed in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update build 16288. The issues started after the latest Insider build appears to install GeForce driver v387.68 without even prompting the user, you could be working and the screens would suddenly go dark and the chimes for a device being removed and then added happen, then you have the new Insider GeForce driver.
It must be noted that as of writing, the latest official driver available at Nvidia.com is 385.41 (WHQL), released at the end of August. According to some reports by users on the GeForce support forums, v387.68 includes OpenGL 4.6, likely supported from the Fall Creators Update.
However, it appears that many users are experiencing issues with Night light or f.lux, with one user commenting on the official Nvidia GeForce.com support forums: "I"m having a number of huge bugs. One is that using either Windows Night Mode or f.lux, all whites are really bright, with an almost halogenic coloring", and the complaints don"t stop there.
There appears to be a workaround though if you are experiencing the same issues in build 16288 with a Nvidia video card, you can rollback the driver to the previous one.
- Press the Start button.
- Type "Device Manager" (without the quotes) and press enter.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Double-click your GPU.
- Click the Driver tab.
- Click Roll Back Driver. There will be a small survey window to fill out, so you can tell Microsoft why you rolled back the driver.
- Be patient, you might get a "Not responding" message.
Once you have rolled back the driver, Night light and f.lux should immediately start working correctly.
This follows issues with the Surface Pro 3 where the latest Fall Creators Update bundled bad firmware, an initial failed rollout to this build, and with it all being so close to the RTM and release of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, Microsoft would probably hope to have fewer issues than it"s currently having.
