Fortnite's 100-player Battle Royale mode goes free-to-play next week

Just a week ago, Epic Games introduced a Battle Royale mode in a test format to its new early access survival game Fortnite. Today, the developer announced that Battle Royale mode would become free to play next week, separating it from the currently paid-only cooperative base game mode, which itself will become free later, in 2018.

While launching a free-to-play Battle Royale mode sounds ideal for implementing pay to win mechanics, the developer insists that the 100-player PVP mode will not sell any items that give advantages. The game will instead include cosmetic and compendium-like content in future updates for players to purchase.

Moreover, in Fortnite"s new Battle Royale FAQ, the developer notes that anyone who bought the game between September 12 and 19 is eligible for a refund via its support center.

This is a decent move by Epic, as there may be plenty of people who bought the game following the announcement of the Battle Royale mode, who could have been peeved to know that the mode would be free to play at launch.

Fortnite"s Battle Royale is slated to launch on September 26, and will arrive with an update carrying the highly requested squad-based matches. The developer also plans to implement vehicles, new maps, inventory management improvements, and more in the future. Sadly, due to the "configuration error" being fixed, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players will no longer be able to play together.
