Free TiVo Desktop PC software for Windows ends June 5th

TiVo has been providing users who have a Windows PC a free way to transfer their recordings of Firefly on Science onto the TiVo DVR program to their PC hard drives (that"s what we use it for, anyway). Now, the company has announced that the free TiVo Desktop PC software will no longer be available after June 5th.

The cut off date was posted on the TiVo Desktop PC web site, and as you can see the software is made to work with Microsoft"s older Windows operating systems; Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. It is not designed to work with Windows 8. In another web message, TiVo says that the TiVo Desktop software will still work with those older Windows versions after June 5th; it simply won"t be available for download anymore.

The good-ish news for Windows 8 users is that TiVo will continue to provide TiVo Desktop Plus, which will work on Microsoft"s latest OS. Even better, the price of the software has gone down, from $24.99 to just $15.99. In addition to the features found in the free software version, TiVo Desktop Plus also allows users to transfer videos from the DVR to portable devices along with moving any web videos to the TiVo DVR hard drive.

Mac owners, you can rest easy; your free version of the TiVo Desktop software is not scheduled to be discontinued, at least not today.
