As London gears up for the 2012 Olympics that starts later this month, Greentomatocars, the second largest taxi company in London has started offering free WiFi access in its full fleet of taxi cabs from today.
Billed as “London’s alternative to Addison Lee and Black Taxis,” Greentomatocars was established in 2006 as London’s first green minicab company. This will make the company the first cab company in Europe to offer the service.
The web connectivity will be powered by individual SIM cards in each cab, enabling download speeds of up to 7.2Mbit/s and upload speeds of up to 2Mbit/s. Passengers traveling with the company simply need to use the password ilovefreewifi to access the service.
Greentomatocars founder Jonny Goldstone told The Inquirer:
"London has long been recognized as a hub for technological innovation. In 2008 it was named the WiFi capital of the world and in 2012 I think it would be fair to say it"s now the free WiFi capital,"
"You don"t have to work in the technology industry to see the importance of connectivity. With free in-car WiFi we are able to offer our customers the access they need to stay connected."
Free WiFi access is not uncommon in the capitol, Nokia launched free WiFi connectivity in Central London last year, and Virgin has pledged to have 80 tube stations connected by the end of July with a total of 120 by the end of this year.
In addition, as Goldstone pointed out above, London was also recognised as the WiFi capital of the world back in 2008.
