FreedomPop have seen a surge in popularity in the US over recent months, and as of today, has expanded their service to the United Kingdom. FreedomPop offers free or flexible plans providing; minutes, texts and monthly data. In response to a successful launch in North America, the company is making its first expansion outside of the US. The UK rollout will offer 200 minutes, 200 texts and 200MB of data for free for those who purchase a FreedomPop SIM card. Users will be required to pay a small activation fee andthose who are able keep their usage below the quota can walk away with no monthly fees for their cellular plan.
While the traditional way to upgrade plans is via an increased monthly payment, it is also possible to up your allowance via third-party surveys and downloading coupons. This allowance can then be used on your device or shared with friends.
The "FreedomPop" project was first announced in 2011, after receiving backing from Skype co-founder, Niklas Zennstom. After the initial introduction in the US, and the most recent UK release, rollouts are scheduled in seven additional markets over the forthcoming year. The company has stated they aim to support 20 markets by 2017, providing these affordable plans across the world.
FreedomPop is the first company to offer a truly free mobile plan in the UK according to CEO, Stephen Stokols:
"The U.K. has had many mobile providers and services enter the market, but none of them offer a completely new business model enabling free service, guaranteed for life. Similar to the U.S., FreedomPop will deliver unprecedented value to consumers with an easy-to-use, high-quality mobile service. We believe everyone should have access to mobile services, and we’re going to make that a reality in the U.K."
To celebrate its launch, the first 10,000 users to join the service will be given a free trial of a higher tier contract, for no additional cost. The plan offers 1000 minutes and texts and 1GB of data for one month, however if not canceled, will continue past the trial period, at a monthly rate of £8.99. For those wishing to make no payments after the SIM"s activation, the free tier can also be accessed starting today.
