Amazon has begun offering refunds for unauthorised in-app purchases made by children. Amazon will now have to refund up to a whopping $70 million in charges that kids have incurred on their parents’ wallets inadvertently. Amazon has to pay back any charges of these sorts that were made between November 2011 and May 2016.
The FTC has said that all eligible for the refund from Amazon should have received an email from the online retailer. If you’ve not gotten the email, but think you’re eligible then head to Amazon’s in-app refund page or log into your Amazon account and go to the Message Centre to find information about requesting a refund under Important Messages.
Anyone looking for a refund can make the request entirely online and won’t have to speak to an Amazon representative on the phone or send anything by snail mail. The deadline for submitting a refund request is May 28, 2018.
Initially, Amazon was against paying the refunds to customers and made an appeal against the decision. In April, it had dropped the appeal after making an agreement with the Federal Trade Commission which allowed Amazon to continue to sell in-app downloadable content in the future.
