Gaikai has been offering its streaming PC game service for users on the PC and Mac for over a year now. In January, it announced a deal where it would offer its service on LG Smart TVs and later revealed its plans for streaming games directly from Facebook. Today Gaikai announced a new agreement that will see a Gaikai client installed on the Wikipad.
What the heck is Wikipad? It was actually first revealed at CES 2012 as a 8.1 inch WiFi-based portable gaming hardware device. However, today"s press release announces that the Wikipad has had some changes in its hardware since CES, including increasing the screen size to 10.1 inches, the option to add a 3G wireless connection and a quad-core processor.
The Android-powered device can also be linked to a WiFi-based television so that games on the Wikipad can also be played on a big screen TV. According to Gaikai executive Robert Stevenson:
The Wikipad is one of the most exciting devices for gaming to date. The tablet was designed with the needs of gamers in mind, enhancing the mobile gaming experience with a set of controls on par with today’s consoles and PC gamepads, enabling gameplay mechanics that have been previously unavailable with just touchscreen controls.
So far there"s no word on a launch date or a price point for the Wikipad.
