Gamers get heard as Microsoft unlocks frame rates for Windows 10 apps

Microsoft has stated time and time again that it wants Windows 10 to be the platform of choice for gamers everywhere. To that end the company has rolled out various features in the Windows Store and the Xbox app to appeal to these crowds. And today, based on feedback, the company is rolling out even more improvements.

In a blog post on the DirectX Developer blog, Microsoft announced that alongside the regular security fixes that will be going out today as part of Patch Tuesday, the Universal Windows Platform will also be getting some improvements of its own. According to the notes, users who install the latest updates will get to benefit from:

  • Support for AMD’s FreesyncTM and NVIDIA’s G-SYNC™ in Universal Windows Platform games and apps
  • Unlocked frame rate for Universal Windows Platform (UWP) games and apps

The additions to the UWP are based on user feedback, from the Store, Feedback Hub and discussion forums like our own. Both of these new features are aimed at making Windows, and UWP a better gaming platform, and both will bring improvements to recently released games like Gears of War:UE and Forza Motorsport 6: Apex. However, users will need for those games to also get their own updates before these new capabilities actually come into play.

Looking forward, the company says it has lots of plans to continue to improve performance and capabilities not only of its DirectX 12 architecture but also of Windows 10 and the Universal Windows Platform, with more news on this to follow soon.

These patches, alongside security and feature additions for Windows 10 will be released later on today.
