Gangnam Style becomes first YouTube video to reach 2 billion views

In July 2012, the South Korean pop music star PSY, who was almost completely unknown outside his home country, released the music video for his song Gangnam Style on his YouTube channel. The video went viral and quickly turned into a massive pop culture phenomenon. Within a few months it not only became the most viewed video on YouTube but also became the first clip on the site to exceed 1 billion views.

Late on Friday, the Gangnam Style video reached yet another milestone as it became the first YouTube video to reach the 2 billion view mark. While it took a lot longer to reach that point compared to its previous 1 billion milestone, the video is still generating an average of well over 58 million views a month.

To celebrate the occasion, the view counter on the page now has two animated versions of PSY dancing next to the numbers. Clicking on the animations will also yield a nice surprise.

The official YouTube Twitter feed celebrated the occasion as well. It could be a very long time before any video comes close to breaking PSY"s record.
