Geeksphone has formally announced a new handset called the Revolution that boots both Android and Firefox OS, thus giving users the ability to see the features of the newest mobile operating system to hit the scene whilst providing a trusty fall-back should Mozilla"s new offering be found unsavoury.
The phone is powered by a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Atom processor paired with 1Gb of RAM and is equipped with an impressive 4.7-inch, qHD 2560x1440 resolution display. It has 4Gb of built-in storage and an 8-megapixel camera although the device is not currently 4G-compatible. The battery is a fairly typical 2000mAh size meaning that you should be able to comfortably divine an entire day"s usage from the phone. The positioning of the device"s circular home button, that glows white when powered on, lends the device a design that resembles the iPhone at first glance.
The positioning and circular shape of the Revolution"s "Home" button means it resembles an iPhone when turned on.
Geeksphone hasn"t yet specified what version of Android is used but from screenshots it looks to be a slight variant on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The phone will boot into its Android install by default although the company promises that it will be making it very easy to boot Firefox OS or indeed any other community sourced OS that the user installs on the device, although Geeksphone has not yet confirmed how exactly this will be made possible.
Geeksphone is a relatively unknown small Spanish manufacturer that up until now has focused on producing low-end, cheap Firefox OS devices. The company is going to be unveiling another device called the Blackphone at the coming Mobile World Congress event which will focus heavily on device security. Geeksphone also made the first ever Firefox OS devices for Mozilla and these closely resembled the just-announced Revolution.
The Revolution will go on sale in Europe on February 20th for €289 (around $395 or £240) with a €20 ($27, £16.50) discount available to those who pre-order it in advance. Currently, there is no word on when it will launch outside of Europe.
