The Battlefield franchise of first person shooters began 10 years ago with the launch of Battlefield 1942 by developer Digital Illusions and publisher Electronic Arts (in fact, the game was released on September 10 of that year). Today, EA gave fans of the series a nice way to celabrate its 10th anniversary.
EA revealed that its Origin PC game download site now has the full version of Battlefield 1942 available to download for free. At the time, the game broke a lot of ground thanks to its vast outdoor maps and its extensive use of vehicles.
Developer Digital Illusions has been firmly in charge of the Battlefield franchise since its debut 10 years ago. There have been many Battlefield games released for the PC since then, including Battlefield Vietnam, Battlefield 2142 and two games in the more story driven Battlefield Bad Company series. EA still has two free-to-play games running for PC users; Battlefield Heroes and Battlefield Play4Free.
The series entered the modern day era with Battlefield 2 and continued with Battlefield 3, which came out in 2011. EA has confirmed that Battlefield 4 is in the works, but details about that game have yet to be announced.
