The GENIVI Alliance, a non-profit industry alliance whose founding members include BMW Group, Delphi, GM, Intel, Magneti-Marelli, PSA, Visteon and Wind River, have announced that they have chosen MeeGo as the basis of their next reference release for In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI). The GENIVI Alliance was founded with a goal of establishing a Linux operating system, middleware and platform for the automotive in-vehicle infotainment industry.
Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation said, "We are pleased to see GENIVI choose MeeGo to power their software platform. MeeGo has been built from the ground up for these types of applications. Because MeeGo is a truly open platform, the work GENIVI will do to extend the platform can benefit the project and all who use it. For developers, this is a great opportunity to harness the power of the MeeGo APIs to target a variety of devices and architectures and extend their work on handset applications toward vehicles."
MeeGo is a mobile operating system based on Linux, and was introduced at the Mobile World Congress in February of this year. The OS is being developed by Intel and Nokia and is a combination of two Linux-based operating systems that Intel and Nokia had been working on separately. Meego is built from Intel"s Moblin OS and Nokia"s Maemo OS with Debian as the base. The operating system is intended to work on mobile devices such as netbooks, smart-phones and IVI devices.
