Gmail on Android now lets you send and request money - and doing so is "completely free"

Google has introduced a new feature in its Gmail app on Android, allowing users to send and request money, just as easily as sharing a photo or file.

"Whether you’re splitting a dinner bill or planning a group trip," Google said today, "you now have a fee-free way to work out the details and settle up without ever leaving the Gmail app on Android, just like you can already do on the web. Plus, you can exchange money with anyone—not just people with Gmail addresses."

Users can send money as an attachment to an email, tapping the attachment icon when composing a new message, and then specifying their chosen sum.

The recipient will then be able to claim that amount directly from the email "without having to install another app", and Google says that "they can even arrange for money they receive to go directly into their bank account".

Google emphasized that the feature is "completely free for both of you". It"s available in the Gmail app on Android, and via Gmail on the web, from today - but it"s currently limited to users in the United States.
