GoDaddy admits to a "spike in domain name transfers"

Thursday was supposed to be the day that web site operators were urged to "Dump GoDaddy". The event was cooked up by a number of Internet users via Reddit in response to GoDaddy"s previous support of the SOPA bill that is currently being considered by the US Congress. Even after GoDaddy pulled their support of the legislation last week, the organizers of Dump GoDaddy Day urged web site owners to transfer their domains away from GoDaddy, saying that the company should have said they oppose all bills that are similar to SOPA.

Thursday News.com reported that GoDaddy"s CEO Warren Adelman sent out the folllowing statement:

We have observed a spike in domain name transfers, which are running above normal rates and which we attribute to GoDaddy"s prior support for SOPA, which was reversed. GoDaddy opposes SOPA because the legislation has not fulfilled its basic requirement to build a consensus among stake-holders in the technology and Internet communities. Our company regrets the loss of any of our customers, who remain our highest priority, and we hope to repair those relationships and win back their business over time.

There is no word yet on exactly how many domains have been transferred out of GoDaddy"s system.
