EA"s rebooted Star Wars Battlefront II is releasing next month, but for those who still prefer the original, there is some good news. Thanks to a joint effort by GOG and Disney, multiplayer functionality has returned to 2005"s Star Wars: Battlefront II.
The classic title"s multiplayer fans were reduced to using third party software back in 2014 due to GameSpy"s shutdown. However, the new updates that arrived today have effectively revived the beloved multiplayer portions on both Steam and GOG versions. Moreover, players of both platforms can even play with each other thanks to the new cross-play functionality.
The only requirement is that GOG players will need to download the company"s optional GOG Galaxy client to join the 64 player online battles.
Replying to a comment asking if GOG will reinstate multiplayer for other games affected by the GameSpy shutdown as well, a GOG representative said the following:
"I think that"s a tough question to answer because there are so many factors involved. I know that for BF2 we had access to the source code and Disney"s full support which made it possible, and that"s just the tip of the iceberg. I think that given the right opportunity, most Goglins would love to see it happen more often though."
Lastly, the GOG store is hosting a timely Disney sale for anyone who wants to join in on the action, offering Star Wars: Battlefront II for just $3.99.
