In November, HP and Google suddenly stopped selling their $279 Chromebook 11 notebook, and urged current owners to ditch the charger included with the laptop in favor of other micro-USB chargers. Today, the companies issued a formal recall of all of the Chromebook 11 chargers via the US Consumer Product and Safety Commission along with a more detailed explanation on the reasons behind the decision.
The commission"s website has posted that 145,000 units are affected by this recall. It adds, "Google has received nine reports of chargers overheating and melting during use. There is one report of a small burn to a consumer and one report of minor property damage to a pillow from an overheating charger." HP Chromebook 11 users should contact Google, rather than HP, to received a free replacement charger for their notebook.
There"s no word yet on when HP and Google will begin to sell the Chromebook 11 again. However, since this recall involved the Chrome OS laptop"s charger rather than the notebook itself, it stands to reason that sales of the Chromebook 11 will begin again after all of the affected chargers have been replaced.
