There are over 2 billion Android devices being actively used around the globe, many of which are being utilized in an enterprise environment. The needs of an enterprise device include continual and timely software security updates, simplified device selection, and consistent software. To fulfill these needs, Google has now announced the Android Enterprise Recommended program, which aims to "bar of excellence for enterprise devices and services".
Google says that its latest initiative sets a benchmark for Android devices and services, and that anything enrolled in the program will have to go through a testing procedure conducted by the company itself. OEMs with products eligible for Android Enterprise will also receive technical expertise and training directly from Google.
The detailed minimum requirements for a device to be eligible for the program can be viewed here, but the salient features include:
- Minimum hardware specifications for Android 7.0+ devices
- Support for bulk deployment of Android devices including zero-touch enrollment
- Delivery of Android security updates within 90 days of release from Google, for a minimum of three years
- Availability of unlocked devices, direct from manufacturer or reseller
- Consistent application experience in managed profiles and on managed devices

Google has also noted these minimum requirements will be updated frequently with each new platform release, in order to ensure that OEMs continue to build high quality devices and experiences.
Currently, the following smartphones have been enrolled into the Android Enterprise Recommended program:
- BlackBerry KEYone and Motion
- Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL
- Huawei Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, P10, P10 Plus, P10 Lite, and P smart
- LG V30 and G6
- Motorola X4 and Z2
- Nokia 8
- Sony Xperia XZ1, XZ1 Compact, XZ Premium, XA2, and XA2 Ultra
Google says that with the passage of time, more devices will be added to this program. Furthermore, the Android Enterprise framework will also be applied to other partners, which include OEMs that build rugged devices, mobile carriers, and system integrators. The firm believes that this initiative will streamline the device selection process for the enterprise, and will aid IT companies to focus more on their core business.
