Google builds 3D objects repository for developers

Google has announced a new 3D objects discovery tool called Poly which allows developers to find and download 3D objects for their virtual (VR) and augmented reality (AR) projects. Poly acts as a distribution platform while Google’s Tilt Brush and Blocks which were launched previously can be used to build the objects.

The great thing about Poly is that it enables developers building for VR, Google’s ARCore, and even Apple’s ARKit use the 3D models in their project. It"s also somewhat reminiscent of Microsoft"s Remix 3D website which picked up a number of new functions back in August.

In a blog post, Andrea Zvinakis, the Poly Product Manager, said:

“Search thousands of free models for use in your AR or VR apps, including everything from a rocket ship to a synthesizer to an ice cream cone. Found a robot you like, but need it with four arms instead of two? You can remix many of the models you find. Click “like” to import a remixable object into Tilt Brush or Blocks and make changes; Poly will automatically credit and link to the original creation when you publish your remix.”

The entire library of objects can be viewed and downloaded now over at Poly.google.com.
