Several months ago, at the Made by Google hardware event, the company announced a new product called Clips, a camera that uses machine learning to recognise faces, expressions, lighting and framing to automatically record short clips for you, or freeze a clip to save a high-resolution image. Now, Google has made the device available for pre-order to users in the U.S.
Of the devices launched at the event, Clips is the last device to go up for sale. Clips pricing starts at $249, and can be pre-ordered now. Unfortunately, you’ll be waiting until March 1st for deliveries to arrive. The price of the device is quite steep for what it is, and with the product being a new category of camera, people may be unsure about the use case and avoid buying the product altogether.
The idea behind Clips is to set it down somewhere or clip it to your clothing and switch it on, it’ll then record seven-second motion clips when it detects anything interesting based on the machine learning technology inside. The device has 16GB of encrypted storage to save your photos, which you can access, keep, or share, from your mobile phone. It’s worth noting that sound is not recorded and the small camera has a battery life of just three hours.
So, if you’ve got a creative mind, can think of some use cases for Clips, and don’t mind splashing out $249 then this might be for you.
