Currently, if you want to keep track of the number of words you"ve already typed in Google Docs, you need to head over to its drop-down menu and then click Word Count under Tools. Today, Google announced a new straightforward method to do just that.
The search giant is rolling out a new capability for G Suite customers to see their word count as they type. The feature is turned on by default and can be enabled by going to Tools > Word count > Display.
In a blog post announcing the new tool, Google acknowledges "that displaying this information is helpful to users working on docs that require minimum or maximum word count." Clicking on the word count box also pulls up additional information including the page count and character count both with and without spaces.
You can also narrow down your selection instead of an entire document by choosing a specific portion of text and highlighting that section. The rollout of this new feature to all G Suite users is set to complete by early October and it will be available on all G Suite editions.
