Over the past several months, Google made some of its services available in Progressive Web Apps (PWA) such as Photos and YouTube Music. Then late last year, the search giant rolled out Chrome 70 with support for quickly installing PWAs on Windows 10 PCs, making it easier to bring these types of apps to the desktop. Today, it appears that another Google product is getting a PWA version courtesy of that capability.
Google Drive now has a progressive web app version, meaning you can start using the cloud-based file storage site as a native app. For Drive users, that means they will no longer see the address bar at the top of the Drive website. Also, users will see an option to install Drive as a PWA with a plus sign at the end of the address bar when they visit the site on a supported browser. In addition to Windows users, Chromebook fans can also see the same option.
However, once you"ve installed the PWA, you will be redirected to a new window in the browser when opening a Drive file if the item requires an editor. That means the PWA experience isn"t complete yet with, for example, Google Docs which will take you to another tab in Chrome when opening a text document. The new experience is available on Android as well with the "Add to Homescreen" via the three-dot menu. You can check out if the option is available in your browser by visiting the Drive site.
