Google employees getting free hardware for Christmas

In September, Microsoft announced that each of its full-time employees would be given a new Microsoft Surface tablet as well as a free Windows Phone 8 smartphone for work or home use. Microsoft held a massive company meeting in Seattle to announce the free swag to its team members. Now it looks like Google has some free hardware to give to its team members just a few days before Christmas, although it"s apparently doing it more quietly than Microsoft.

The Next Web reports, via unnamed sources, that all Google employees have been informed they can pick from one of three Google-branded hardware products. One is the $249 Samsung Chromebook, running on the Chrome OS, while another is the $199 Nexus 7 tablet.

The final choice is the Motorola RAZR M smartphone, which is perhaps an unusual choice considering that Google is also selling its Nexus 4 smartphone to the public. However, the company has had issued keeping up with the demand for the smartphone, which may be the reason why employees have not been given that option

As of the third quarter of 2012, Google"s employee head count totaled 36,118. Last year, Google team members received a free Galaxy Nexus smartphone.
