Google: Expect Android N to launch "later this summer"

At its I/O developer conference today, Google announced the third developer preview of Android N, its next major update to the phenomenally popular OS. The update will be known as Android 7.0 when it launches, but the company is also inviting users to submit their suggestions for the sweet and tasty treat after which the N release will be named.

But when will it actually launch? In recent weeks, the company has generally made vague references to its arrival "later this year".

Today, Google said: "We"re still putting the final touches on the N release, and we expect to launch it later this summer." That"s not quite the same as getting a firm, specific release date, but it"s still a bit earlier than some predictions, which suggested that it might not arrive until autumn.

Ahead of its launch, Google still has two further developer previews lined up. It described the latest preview that it released today as being of "beta quality", and suggested that devs can now be confident enough to use it on their main devices.
