There"s going to be a lot of people in Kansas City that will soon be able to receive 1 Gbps Internet speeds for both upload and download. Google announced today that pre-registration for its Google Fiber network in that community has resulted in at least 180 of 202 city neighborhoods getting qualified to receive the service.
In a post on the Google Fiber blog, the company said that the final tally from its "fiberhoods" is still being determined and will be announced later this week. Neighborhoods in both cities were asked to sign up a certain amount of households with a $10 registration fee to show they wanted to get the $70 a month 1 Gbps Google Fiber service (or $120 a month if they wanted the TV service as well).
Some neighborhoods in both cities did not quality for Google Fiber this time, but the company said they will hold another pre-registration rally in 2013 to try to sign up the remaining parts of Kansas City. It also plans to work with community groups, non-profits and others to help them teach citizens about "digital literacy". The blog states:
Together we will work to equip Kansas Citians with the knowledge and tools they need to get online and use the web to their advantage for education, job hunting and more. We’ll have more details about this program soon.
There"s no word yet on when the first 1 Gbps customer will receive service from Google Fiber.
