Google+ hits 100 million active monthly users

Google has said that its social network, Google+, has reached 100 million active monthly users, with a total of 400 million users signing up since June 2011.

Google"s senior vice president of engineering said,

It was only a year ago that we opened public sign-up, and we couldn"t have imagined that so many people would join in just 12 months. While Google+ is all about creating a better experience across Google, it"s also a destination.

While this is still far off Facebook numbers, Google+ is far from dead. From my experience it"s still a niche for technology focused people and photographers, if it will ever crack the mainstream is still yet to be seen. A problem with these numbers however is that we still don"t know what Google classes as an "active user", it could be something as little as only clicking a +1 button in a whole month.

Google also recently announced the acquisition of Nik Software, makers of iOS and OS X photo-app Snapseed. The team will work on Google+, likely to do add its technology from Snapseed to the platform"s mobile apps and web interface.
