Google has been making various improvements to Search through the form of enhanced features or improvements to the underlying technologies. Some of the recent improvements include increased emphasis on original reporting in the search results, improved algorithms for more relevant features snippets, and easier content discoverability within videos. Today, the search giant is detailing the improvements being made to better organize top stories according to the search results.
The company says that it is using machine learning to help make it easier for users to get to relevant articles that are timely. When users search for a specific topic that is time sensitive, or one that might have multiple results, the carousel of stories at the top of the results will be organized by story to provide a more relevant set of stories that are not just recent, but also diverse in order to provide users with a better understanding of the news items based on the user’s search.

The firm adds that it developed a new “story-understanding technology” to map certain aspects that are involved in a news story and then correlate and connect these aspects. This results in the ability of the service to determine the flow of related articles and help stitch a relevant stream of articles that assist users in finding the right content suited to their needs and aid in understanding the stories. Additionally, notable quotes and opinion pieces too will make it to the top stories carousel.
These updates to Search are currently rolling out to mobile users using English in the U.S. However, the company adds that the improvements will make it to more markets in more languages in the coming months.
