Google introduces a new build number format in Android 8.0 Oreo

If you’re the sort of person who enjoys poking around the Android setting menus to find out obscure details about your operating system, you should know that Google has changed up the build number format in Android 8.0 Oreo. The new format is very readable but you’ve got to know what you’re looking at to make any sense of it.

The new build number string is formatted in the following way:

PVBB.YYMMDD.bbb

The P variable signifies which version of Android you’re currently running, Oreo builds will have the letter ‘O’ to represent Oreo. The V variable represents the platform branch your build is on; most users should see ‘P’ for primary. The BB variable represents the code branch used in the build.

The YYMMDD variable is simply the date that the release was branched or synced with the development branch – it’s not necessarily the date the build was built on. Lastly, the bbb variable is a number which differentiates between different builds with the same date code, sequentially starting with 001.
