Google is canceling its I/O 2020 developer conference, or at least the physical portion of it. It seems that the event will still be live-streamed. Those that have registered for the event will get their refund by March 13. There were standard passes for $1,150 and academic passes for $375.
As you"d guess, the event has been canceled due to fears over the COVID-19 coronavirus, and I/O is the latest in a growing list of tech events to be canceled, postponed, or changed to a virtual event. Mobile World Congress was the first to be canceled, following a whole bunch of companies pulling out beforehand. GDC has been postponed as well, and then yesterday, Microsoft changed MVP Summit to an online-only event.
Google sent emails to attendees with the following statement:

As a consolation prize, those that got to register this year will not need to enter the lottery for next year, as they"ll automatically be able to register.
This clearly isn"t going to stop here, as more events will be canceled. Microsoft"s Build 2020 conference is slated for the week after that, so that"s probably next on the chopping block.
