A Google spokesperson has confirmed to 9to5Google that it will be discontinuing the Chromecast Audio. Originally first brought up by Redditor u/joliolioli after his order was canceled, an order which he originally placed before Christmas, the end was nigh for when Google cut the price of the device to $15 from Black Friday till the end of February, a move likely intended to clear stock out.
In the statement to 9to5Google, the spokesperson said: "Our product portfolio continues to evolve, and now we have a variety of products for users to enjoy audio. We have therefore stopped manufacturing our Chromecast Audio products. We will continue to offer assistance for Chromecast Audio devices, so users can continue to enjoy their music, podcasts and more."
The device allows you to stream audio from a smart device to any speaker with a 3.5mm input jack. However, with the rise of smart speakers and displays, many customers will likely opt for the newer devices which offer much more functionality. If you"d still like to get a Chromecast, now might be a good timeto do so for the cheap price of $15 directly from Google.
Update: Google"s website now lists the Chromecast Audio as out of stock in the United States. It may still be available in other countries, however.
