Google has temporarily disabled Xiaomi"s access to Home and Assistant devices after a Mi Home camera user gained a view of still images from other homes" cameras. The Mountain View giant says it is currently working with Xiaomi on a fix.
The camera bug came to light after a Reddit user tried to stream content from his Xiaomi Mijia 1080p Smart IP security camera to a Nest Hub. Instead of showing his local feed, the Nest Hub displayed random stills from other people"s cameras through Xiaomi"s security camera. For example, the images were those of a sleeping baby or an enclosed porch. The user claimed also that the camera was newly purchased with firmware version 3.5.1_00.66.
In a statement, Google says, "We’re aware of the issue and are in contact with Xiaomi to work on a fix. In the meantime, we’re disabling Xiaomi integrations on our devices." The move affects all Mi Home integrations and commands for the Assistant, according to Android Police.
In October of last year, Google announced strict rules on the type of third-party devices that can integrate with its system. Those rules were meant to bolster the privacy and data security of users as well as to ensure safe integration with several smart home products.
