Google, the company behind YouTube, has released a new Youtube application to replace Apple"s version of the popular video app. Back in the time when the original iPhone was launched, Apple and Google signed a 5-year licensing agreement to offer Youtube on Apple"s mobile devices. But because Apple announced it will no longer include the app on iOS 6, Google has come up with a replacement.
Part of the agreement was that Apple developed the app and its interface, which regrettably did not change much over the past five years. The new application however sports a better interface, which shares a resemblance to its Android counterpart. There are several new features as well, such as an improved search (also by voice) and a way to get to your subscribed channels. It"s easier to share a video on social media now and you can add comments while you"re watching a video. Videos keep playing if you"re going through the list of suggested items or the navigational menu as well.
There"s access to thousands of new videos, because videos with ads are no longer blocked. That also means you"ll see advertisements from now on with certain content, such as official music videos.
According to YouTube"s mobile product manager Andrey Doronichev in an interview for CNN, Google was already building the app months before Apple made its announcement:
Apple and us have been working very closely on this one. This was the right thing to do from both companies" standpoint. User experience is so much better.
If you want to try out the new app, which is available for iOS 4.3 and higher on the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, head over to the App Store.
