Data saving features are very important to those living in countries with very small data caps, which has led to companies such as Google and Facebook to offer lighter versions of their apps in such markets. Apps which do not have similar options often end up exhausting the users" data cap, but now Google has stepped in to avoid such situations with the newly launched Triangle.
Triangle is an experimental tool that notifies users about data usage by various apps and allows it to block access to mobile data. The app is currently only available in the Philippines and some of its features are limited to just two carriers in the country. According to Triangle"s Play Store listing, it contains the following features:
- See your current data usage
- Use "Data Saver" to block unwanted data usage
- Check your prepaid data balance (Globe and Smart prepaid users only)
- Download and try new apps without risk of running out of data (Globe and Smart prepaid users only)
- Get extra data by using apps you have and love (Globe and Smart prepaid users only)
Google already offers Data Saver mode in its Chrome browser on Android, and a lighter version of the YouTube app called YouTube Go in many developing markets. It is likely that the Triangle app may expand to other developing markets too, but there is no official word about it yet.
