While Apple recently made headlines regarding leaked information that it would be creating its own 3D map system for the next iPhone, it appears Google will get the jump on the company with a 3D map system of its own.
Today the company began sending out invitations to an event for Google Maps that clearly indicates a 3D map overhaul for the service. The event will be led by Brian McLendon, vice president of Google Maps and Google Earth, who will demonstrate upcoming changes to the service and share the company"s vision for its future. The event will be held on June 6 at 9:30 a.m. Pacific time.
CNET provided the following summary of the event, which was provided with its invitation:
At this invitation-only press gathering, Brian McClendon, VP of Google Maps and Google Earth, will give you a behind-the-scenes look at Google Maps and share our vision. We"ll also demo some of the newest technology and provide a sneak peek at upcoming features that will help people get where they want to go -- both physically and virtually. We hope to see you there.
It"s been rumored that Apple is preparing to drop its Google Maps integration for iOS 6, which will supposedly power the next iPhone. The mapping feature of Apple"s phone has been powered by Google Maps since it was launched in 2007. Last year Apple acquired a 3D mapping company, C3 Technologies, which likely resulted in the company"s decision to abandon its Google Maps integration.
