Six weeks ago, Google announced the Android 7.1.2 beta, offering previews to supported devices and confirming an end of support for the Nexus 6 and 9. But the firm really hasn"t said anything about the "maintenance update" since, and the only real news was when the Nexus 6P received the beta about four weeks later.
According to a new report from Android Central, Google might be releasing Android 7.1.2 Nougat to supported Nexus and Pixel devices on April 3.
It"s based on the idea that Canadian carrier Rogers is going to release an update to Pixel phones on that date that enables VoLTE, and the company has already been testing that feature on the Android 7.1.2 beta. The timeline fits as well, since Google originally said that the final release for the update would be after a couple of months.
It would be unprecedented for Google to release an update without ever even offering a second preview build, but these are uncharted waters to begin with. Prior to Nougat, the company only did Developer Previews, and they were only for major x.0 updates, let alone minor or maintenance updates.
As of this month"s usage breakdown, just 0.4% of active Google Play Android devices are on the latest version, so if you don"t have a supported Nexus or Pixel, you"ll be waiting a while for Android 7.1.2 no matter what happens.
