Almost 95% of Android handsets are still waiting to receive the Lollipop update, six months after it was first announced - but Google is nonetheless continuing to push ahead with development of new versions of its operating system.
The very latest version is Android 5.1.1, and last week the company released its first factory image of that update - not for one of its flagship Nexus phones or tablets, but for the Nexus Player, the ASUS-built Android TV box that debuted as part of the Lollipop launch last year.
You may have been expecting this latest Android version to make its next appearance on Google"s newest devices. But in fact, the company has now released Android 5.1.1 factory images not for the Nexus 6 smartphone or Nexus 9 tablet, but for three of its older devices.
The images have been published via the Google Developers site, but you can also grab them via these direct download links:
- Android 5.1.1 for Google Nexus 7 Wi-Fi (2012)
- Android 5.1.1 for Google Nexus 7 Wi-Fi (2013)
- Android 5.1.1 for Google Nexus 10
Meanwhile, the Lollipop rollout slowly continues to make its way to other devices around the world, with many manufacturers and carriers still dragging their feet when it comes to releasing the older Android 5.0.x update.
HTC said this week that owners of its One M8 will have to wait three more months before their phones are upgraded to Android 5.1.
