Google Chat picked up support for dark mode on Android and iOS last year in response to popular demand from users. Over a year later, Chat"s web and Progressive Web App (PWA) versions are playing catch-up.
Google announced today that it"s rolling out dark mode to Chat on the web and to its PWA version. It"s the latest Google service that has gained the dark viewing experience, providing eye comfort to users especially in low-light conditions.
It"s pretty much similar to the dark theme that"s already available on Chat"s Android and iOS versions, with dark gray in the background and a shade of green highlighting your current conversation. On the other hand, the text fields have a lighter shade of gray.
The new experience is available to all Google Workspace customers as well as G Suite Basic and Business customers. Admins don"t need to do anything to enable the feature. End users, meanwhile, need to head over to Settings and then go to theme settings where they can turn on dark mode.
It"s rolling out gradually, so don"t worry if it"s not yet live on your end, although it should be available to everyone in up to 15 days. The new dark look is seen as a part of Google"s effort to get people to switch to Chat from Hangouts, where some users were automatically signed out earlier this month.
