When Google launched its official Google Search app for Windows 8 a few weeks ago, we noted that the app was one of the few in the Windows Store that didn"t support Windows RT. Today, the company has released an update to the app that solves that problem.
As noted on the Google Search Windows 8 page, the update allows the app to run on Windows RT. That means users of Microsoft"s Surface tablet, as well as the Asus Vivo Tab RT and upcoming future Windows RT devices from Dell, Samsung and others, can go ahead and install the app. The new version of the app also reportedly has "more YouTube support", according to the notes. According to one of our commentators, this means the app now lets its users view YouTube videos inside the app for the first time.
Once installed, the Google Search app can be used as a replacement for the Search Charm in both Windows 8 and now Windows RT, rather than Microsoft"s default Bing service. It also offers up links to many of Google"s online services such as Gmail, Google Maps, Google+, and Google Drive and even allows for users to search via their voice.
So far, Google has yet to release any dedicated Windows 8/RT apps for services like YouTube, Google Maps and others.
