Google testing redesigned image search on desktop

You may recall that last year, Google introduced a smarter image search page for mobile devices, which included more accessible details and at-a-glance information to identify the kind of image users are looking at.

Now, the company is doing something very similar to its search engine on the desktop version of the website as well. The new design, which you can see in the screenshot above (courtesy of TechCrunch), does away with the horizontal alignment we"ve seen previously, opting for a less strict vertical alignment.

The new design also introduces badges to quickly identify what the image is related to. For instance, if it comes from a cooking page, the image may be labeled as a recipe, while images from Amazon will have a "Product" badge. The image results will also show a brief description of the image along with the source website.

Clicking an image will also bring up a new preview page, which will include some information regarding the picture, including pricing for products or the ingredients in a recipe. Below the image preview, you"ll also find a list of related images, which appear to include visually identical pictures, as well as a second list showing similar items.

While Google did confirm that it"s testing the new design, it didn"t provide any more detail or a time frame for a widespread rollout, so, for now, we can only wait for more information from the company.
