Google is celebrating the 10th year of the Android mobile operating system, and has revealed its plans to bring devices powered by the OS to more users in the near future. The company"s Android Go and Android One programs will be the main contributors to this effort as they serve the purpose of giving a unified Android experience on inexpensive smartphones.
In its blog post, Google has revealed that it would be announcing new smartphones powered by Android Oreo (Go Edition) and Android One next week at Mobile World Congress. The company has mentioned that some of the Go-powered smartphones could be priced lower than $50 owing to the low-end hardware support facilitated by the lightweight OS which can run on 1GB of RAM.
Although there have been smartphones priced in such brackets before, devices made using Google"s reference designs will probably deliver a better experience despite the reduced resources on these devices. One of the handsets that could be powered by Android Oreo (Go Edition) is the Nokia 1, which has leaked on multiple occasions so far. There is also a rumor of India"s Micromax launching such a device for the local market.
Android One has evolved from a low-end specification to the premium mid-range over the last year with the launch of the Moto X4 and the Xiaomi Mi A1. It will be interesting to see what kind of devices will be added to the lineup next week.
