Google announced today a new feature of Search that will soon allow users to track the status of their package. The tool is currently in the Early Adopters Program and shipping companies can integrate their APIs to help customers see information related to their parcel directly on Search.
The Mountain View-based company noted that Search is often the first resort of people looking to check the status of an item they"ve purchased online, for example. Soon, you can just enter a package ID in a box displayed directly on Search to track your package. The relevant information will include the current location of the parcel and its expected delivery date.
Shipping firms that want to take part of the program can submit a RESTful JSON or XML API that returns the package tracking information. These pieces of information must be made available to Google. Application for the Early Adopters Program is now open via this link. You can also check the requirements here to find out if you"re eligible for the program.
The package tracking feature will be available in all countries where Search is accessible. However, there"s no word on when Google will roll out the new capability.
