Google has quietly updated its Measure app with support for all ARCore-enabled devices, including the Pixel phones, Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 ranges, and the LG G7 ThinQ.
The original version of the augmented reality (AR)-based app was compatible only with the Project Tango phones. However, Google shuttered support for Tango last March following the launch of ARCore last August in response to Apple"s ARKit, so it only makes sense for the app to add support for the search giant"s new platform for building AR experiences.
In addition to the ARCore support, the app also received a fresh UI design and improvements to its visuals and controls to help you measure with more accuracy whatever you point your phone"s camera at.
For starters, the Measure app lets you obtain the size or height of things in the real world by moving your phone around to look for objects and then dragging the length tool or height tool into the camera viewfinder. An estimated measurement will then pop up on the screen.
