In its ever-expanding quest for world domination, Google today announced its most recent acquisition: Gecko Design, a California-based industrial design firm that will contribute to the physical development of upcoming Google products like self-driving cars, Google Glass, and the ambitious "Project Loon".
Gecko Design has been brought on to work with Google X, Google"s semi-secret lab in Mountain View, California which develops what co-founder and CEO Larry Page calls "moon shots" -- major technological advancements and "science fiction-sounding solutions." The lab has been responsible for currently teased technologies like self-driving cars, Project Loon (which utilizes high-altitude balloons to create a worldwide wireless network), and blood glucose-testing contact lenses for patients with diabetes.
Gecko"s design portfolio includes work on the Slingbox media streaming device, the HP TouchSmart series of computers, and the Fitbit activity tracker. In a statement posted on Gecko Design"s website, President Jacques Gagne expressed his excitement towards joining Google.
This is an incredible opportunity for everyone at Gecko. We are very excited and honored to join Google(x) and work on a variety of cutting edge products.
The details of the acquisition were not immediately disclosed, but knowing Google"s dedication and focus towards Google X, Gecko Designs" role in future technological advancements won"t fail to amaze.
