Project Fi, Google’s mobileservice, debuted in the US back in 2015. Over the years, the Mountain View giant has evolved and expanded the service, spanning multiple countries and offering competitive plans. Earlier this year, the service launched in additional markets, taking the total number of countries where the service is available to 170.
With such large-scale expansion of the service, one would wonder why the service still retains the ‘Project’ branding. That might change soon, as Google might be renaming itto ‘Google Fi’. Spotted by folks over at Thurrott, a poster on Reddit shared images of a pamphlet that was included in their Pixel device purchase that uses the new “Google Fi” branding. As seen in the picture, the logo too seems to have been updated, sporting the Google logo colors.
This change does make sense, as the service has now matured enough to be out of the ‘Project’ phase. The naming also falls in line with the firm’s increased emphasis on phasing out individual brand names in favor of the ‘Google’ brand. A few such efforts include the Google Pay rebrand and the Google One service.
Though nothing is official yet, if true, it might not be too long before the company announces the change publicly.
