Brian Krebs - or just Krebs, as he is affectionately known - is a journalist who specialises in security and the underbelly of the internet. He has been attacked both online and offline many times due to the hard hitting and often revealing stories he publishes on his blog, Krebs on Security.
Krebs recently published an article about vDOS, a booter service available for hire. This provides what it calls a "Stresser" service to its customer base.
Starting on Tuesday, Krebs on Security was hit by a massive DDoS attack. The site - which was protected by Akamai, a DDoS protection firm - managed to stay online for a short time while Akamai engineers battled to stop the attack. After a while, though, there was nothing they could do against such a large and sustained attack, and they made Krebs aware they would be removing the site from their network to protect other customers.
As we reported previously, the attack was the biggest Akamai has ever seen, at over 620Gbps, well and truly beating the previous record of 363Gbps.
Krebs" site remained offline most of the week and only resurfaced this morning under the protection of Project Shield. Project Shield is a Google-funded DDoS protection service that is given free of charge to verified journalists and non-profit organisations.
